“I just need a logo.”
I recently had a conversation with Darci at Brand Muffins and we both laughed—we both have heard this phrase before. However, there is a fundamental flaw with this kind of thinking, and here is why.
What is in a logo?
A logo is more than just a random image drawn by some random graphic designer in a warehouse somewhere. I mean, it could go like that, but that process does you as a business owner a complete disservice.
A logo is a visual representation of your brand. It is what you want people to associate with your business when they see it. It is, in effect, your brand, your identity, who and what your business is all about.
Behind the logo
When business owners approach Darci and her team at Brand Muffins and say, “I just need a logo,” they are missing an opportunity that is very, very strategic. There is a science behind logo design, a psychology behind effective logos.
At Brand Muffins, Darci and her team at Brand Muffins dig into a business to uncover an company’s mission, vision, and operating strategies. That logo is at the top of a pyramid so to speak. It is the most visible element of a company’s identity.
A hastily-drawn logo does nothing for a business. It is clip art that any company can own. Heck, you might even find a $50 logo on another business’s signage. How embarrassing would that be?
The strategy of a logo
In this day and age, a strong brand identity is necessary, as all of us are drawn to the ever-changing images and graphics that come at us from the internet and various social media sources.
A good logo might stick in someone’s head for a few days. A great logo can not only stick in someone’s head, it can literally capture the essence of a company and serve as a visual reinforcement for what you stand for in your business.
Consumers have a lot of choices today and many ways to make a purchase. A logo is one critical tool in your company’s branding toolbox.
An effective logo is just one piece of a puzzle that takes time to build. Build it right and they will come. Yes, this sounds a little like the movie Field of Dreams, but you get the idea. No one just needs a logo. Rather, they need a plan…
